What Is SCS?
SCS is a form of neuromodulation: a device is implanted under the skin to deliver gentle electrical impulses to the spinal cord, interfering with pain signals before they reach the brain.
Who’s it for? Ideal candidates include patients with:
Back pain continuing despite previous (often multiple) spinal surgeries
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
Neuropathic leg pain not responsive to nerve blocks or medication
Peripheral neuropathy (in select cases)
Spinal cord stimulation is considered after conservative and interventional treatments have been exhausted — but before high-risk options such as long-term opioids or further invasive surgery are explored.
What’s the Process?
Trial Phase: A temporary stimulator is inserted and worn for 5–7 days to evaluate pain relief and function improvement.
Permanent Implantation: If the trial is successful (usually ≥50% pain reduction), the device is permanently implanted.
Benefits of SCS
Significantly reduces neuropathic pain
Improves mobility and sleep
Reduces or eliminates opioid dependence
Fully reversible and adjustable
Medicare funding is available for eligible patients through pain specialists.
